I am convinced that style in writing is your voice. It is how you tell the story. It is your order of words – how you speak. Of course, you change the words in dialogue to suit your character’s speech, but still it is how it sounds to you and you can’t change that fact, because if you did you would be acting and it would sound false.
You can improve how you write by altering an insipid word to a stronger one or change the order in which you say something to make it clearer for the reader, but it is still your voice.
In some cases, it’s like choosing which book to read. I’m sure we all read the first couple of pages to get the feel of the writing before we buy. And in that moment, we decide not only about content, but also about the writer’s style of putting down words.
