It doesn’t matter whether it’s deciding what my next painting is going to be or my next garment I’m going to knit.
Somehow, I know I would panic if I didn’t have an inkling of what I was going to do next.
As it works out, it’s like doodling. Your subconscious throws an idea up in the air before you have to make the big decision and if it stays with you in your mind, it grows. You give it time to evaporate as you weigh up the consequences and if it is still uppermost in your mind, you grab hold of it and make it work.
As my novel that I’m working on comes to a brilliant finish, surprising me along with my readers, I keep hold of my idea for my next novel, along with scribbled notes that have been added periodically as new thoughts come into my head. I’m always frightened to write them down as they might not appear as magical as first thought, but that’s when the work begins – you twist and turn it into the practical and make it work for your new novel.
