Memorable Books

The Small Woman by Alan Burgess

I read this book when I was in my twenties and I still have it on my bookshelves. I couldn’t give it away, because Gladys Aylward was my heroine. She was a parlour maid in London who became a missionary in China. I loved the idea of seeing foreign lands and being adventurous. As it turned out to be, I went to China myself when I retired from teaching and I saw a culture that I would never have found out about, unless I had gone to that country. I felt privileged to have been there.

This book, of course. was made into a film called The Inn of the Sixth Happiness.
